Host Families Seminar

'Diversity and Intercultural Learning: A Seminar on Host Families' is targeted at volunteers and staff involved in the recruitment and management of host families. The aim of the seminar is to increase the capacity of European YFU organisations to include a larger diversity of host families in exchange programmes.

The seminar will take place from 2-7 October in Helsinki, Finland and will explore how current intercultural learning programs and approaches should be adapted to better train and support host families through their learning process.

 The objectives of the training will be:

  • deepen participants’ understanding of social exclusion and raise awareness of current trends in YFU regarding the lack of inclusion of host families with fewer opportunities;
  • exchange best practice examples found in YFU and in other organisations for the inclusion of young people with economic, social and geographic obstacles in youth exchanges, through the role of ‘host sibling’;
  • foster the participants’ development of attitudes that value the inclusion of culturally diverse families from their own local communities into the work of YFU;
  • Explore approaches and methods for YFU organisations and their youth workers to identify and include families with fewer opportunities as host families.
