European Voluntart Service (EVS)
The European Voluntary Service (EVS) is an exchange programme under the European Commission's Youth In Action (YIA) programme which offer volunteering opportunities to young people who are between 18-30 years old from 2 weeks to up to one year. Living and working in a foreign country are the main opportunities in EVS programme. Taking care of children, immigrants or homeless people or working in an office... You can be volunteer in various areas for an EVS term. As an outcome, Youthpass which certificates volunteer's learning outcomes and skills gained during the volunteering period is given the volunteer after his/her EVS term. What about costs? European Commission (EC) covers basically all the cost related to the programme. I.e. travel costs of volunteer, accommodation and food expenses in Host Country (HC), public transportation, language class, trainings of EVS volunteer which are departure, on- arrival and mid-term trainings... Also a small pocket money is given to volunteer in EVS term. Apart from the volunteer Sending organisation (SO), Host Organisation (HO) and Co-ordinating Organisation (CO) are involved in EVS programme. An EVS volunteer should find a Sending Organisation which assists the volunteer to find a Host Organisation, in his/her home country. Either the Sending or Host Organisation also takes in the role of Co-ordinating Organisation which is in charge of managing the grant. Be an EVS volunteer too!

Coloured Glasses: As part of the EVS programme, students
from other countries visit secondary schools and carry out workshops on
intercultural learning. The workshops are based on a manual entitled Coloured Glasses: a Resource Manual for
Intercultural Education. The workshop is tailored for both teachers and
students and uses interactive non-formal education methods. The workshop helps secondary-school students explore and learn
about values, cultural differences, stereotypes, non-verbal and verbal
communication as well as identity. This project started in 2001 and it will keep running during 2011 and 2012 with several YFU organisations. If you are interested to learn more, see the German website of the project - Understanding Intercultural Dialouge: EEE-YFU hosted a volunteer from YFU Sweden in 2007 up to 2008 fro one year EVS term.
